IA Rehman’s praxis

LAHORE: The man who showed the path for struggle for peoples’ rights and consistently enriched progressive ideals during worst of circumstances peacefully passed away leaving behind an inspiring progressive legacy and a huge void for a subdued civil society to fill. A man of progressive worldview, professional excellence, creative intellect and unflinching commitment to the cause of secularism, democracy and socialism, he fought against all kinds of oppressions and discriminations and worked for the emancipation of the downtrodden. Being a progressive ‘dervish’, he was admired and respected by both adversaries and admirers because of his polite demeanours, humility, honesty, simplicity and selfless dedication to various causes of the people.

Kahaan chalay Mehar!
Itna dukh de jaoge kya
[In this sad night of darkness
For where did you put on your harness
Will you now stand by no longer
Will you leave us with so much distress]
Fahmida Riaz,
Nauha Major Ishaq ke Intiqal Par [Dirge On the Death of Major Ishaq]
Major Ishaq Muhammad was born on April 4, 1921, a hundred years ago today, in a village, Akhara, located 16-17 miles from Jalandhar. As I write this piece remembering the revolutionary founder of the Mazdoor Kisan Party, the ongoing farmers’ protests in neighbouring India have entered their seventh month. And various peasant organisations in Pakistan are planning a ‘tractor march’ to the federal and Punjab capitals if their demands for the support price of wheat, reduced power tariffs for tube-wells and fertiliser rates are not accepted. Later this month, April 17 will also mark the International Day of Peasant Struggle.

SIALKOT: Special Assistant to Chief Minister (SACM) on Information Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan Sunday said a ‘thug’ from Sialkot used to show his bravery by jumping into canals when he was in power, but now he was in jail and was begging for facilities.
Apparently referring to Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) Member of National Assembly (MNA) Khwaja Muhammad Asif, she said he might be brave, but he was afraid of giving his money trail and details of suspicious transfer of funds.
While talking to the media here, she said Kh Asif marred the honour of Sialkot and its residents by his corruption, and now he feared that in case of admitting to his wrongdoings, even his family would not allow him to enter their home.
