UPDF General Headquarters was emptied into Parliament!

Daily Monitor Saturday February 13 2021 Summary Mr Asuman Bisiika says: If it were left to me, I would call for a review of UPDF representation in Parliament.   Advertisement Once again, we arrogate myself the right to write about the UPDF; this, in spite of accusations that I always poke our blunt noses in the wrong place. And we come with the question: What criteria should the UPDF use to select or nominate and elect its 10 Members of Parliament?  In 2016, I wrote in these very pages an article titled: ‘Why the UPDF should have Maj Gen Muhoozi as an MP.’ I proposed that Maj Gen Muhoozi Keinerugaba (now a Lieutenant General) should be a Member of Parliament. The following were my arguments:

Poor turnout: What is keeping     voters away?

Daily Monitor Saturday February 06 2021 People take cover as police fires teargas to disperse a campaign rally in Mukono District on November 30. In discussing the outcome of the elections and trying to explain the voting patterns, Dr Julius Kizza, a lecturer of Political Science at Makerere University, says the patterns appear to have been informed by the level of political awareness. “Rural voters who are predominantly poverty-stricken peasants voted for a presidential monarchy. By contrast, the urban-based voters, who are more politically conscious, predominantly voted the Opposition. They voted for change,” Dr Kizza argues.

FDC When the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) honchos sit down to do a forensic analysis of the recent elections, the outcome will be straightforward: not what they wanted. For the first time since elections were organised under the multiparty dispensation, the FDC party has lost its position as the biggest Opposition political party. They lost this time to the newly formed National Unity Platform (NUP) party.

Mr Museveni, who has tweaked his name to add Tibuhaburwa during campaigns, laid out what he claimed was a vision he has for not only East Africa but Africa at large. “NRM came to deal with historical problems of Uganda and Africa. We are not job seekers. They think I am here because I am looking for a job. They are lying [to] themselves,” Mr Museveni said while campaigning in the eastern district of Kumi last November.

Monitor journalists share their experiences on campaign trail

Daily Monitor Friday January 15 2021 Journalists flee from teargas as they covered campaigns in Kampala on October 23. On several occasions, journalists were targeted as security clashed with presidential candidates and their supporters. PHOTO / ABUBAKER LUBOWA Summary From being jailed to getting teargassed, Daily Monitor reporters saw it all as they covered presidential candidates who have traversed the country for votes over the last two months. Advertisement My arrest was the turning point“My arrest on December 30 in Kalangala District proved to me the saying that a dead journalist cannot tell a story. It was sad seeing my story being told by someone else even after I had followed up the details for more than 11 hours. That was my worst experience on the campaign trail with National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine.
