Intel’s 11th Gen Core S-series desktop processors, code-named Rocket Lake-S are now in the wild. We were sent an Intel Core i9-11900K and a Core i5-11600K to put through their paces. Intel also supplied an ASUS Republic of Gamers Maximus XIII Hero motherboard with the new Z590 chipset to test it all with.
Intel’s 11th Gen CPUs still utilise 14nm silicon the same as their predecessors. As with the 9th and 10th generation of Intel CPUs, the Rocket Lake chips use an LGA 1200 socket. Except for the H410 and B460-based boards, they are also compatible with last year’s 400-series chipset motherboards (subject to bios updates). This means that you can likely slot a new i5 or i9 in as a replacement for your 10th Gen CPU. But should you?

Intel introduces 11th Gen Core S-series Core i5, Core i7 and Core i9 ‘Rocket Lake’ desktop processors
After detailing its 11th Gen Core S-series desktop processors (code-named “Rocket Lake-S”) with New Cypress Cove architecture featuring Ice Lake Core architecture and Tiger Lake Graphics architecture back in October last year, Intel has officially introduced the 11th Gen Core S-series Core i5, Core i7 and Core i9 processors. The new architecture brings up to 19% gen-over-gen instructions per cycle (IPC) improvement for the highest frequency cores and adds Intel UHD graphics featuring the Intel Xe graphics architecture for rich media and intelligent graphics capabilities.

Debuting a new desktop core architecture for the first time in over half a decade, chip-maker Intel has unveiled 11th Gen Core S-series desktop processors codenamed Rocket Lake-S, that will delivers more performance to gamers and PC enthusiasts.
At the top of the stack is new flagship chip, the Core i9-11900K with eight cores and 16 threads that can reach speed up to 5.3GHz and supports DDR4 RAM at 3,200MHz.
The unlocked 11th Gen Intel Core desktop processor supports fast memory speeds with DDR4-3200 to help enable smooth gameplay and seamless multitasking on this platform, Intel said in a statement late on Tuesday.
