More help is on its way for people in Herefordshire facing financial hardship

More help is on its way for people in Herefordshire facing financial hardship HEREFORDSHIRE Council leaders are proposing to offer more support for people facing financial hardship. Cabinet members agreed to increase the discounts for those eligible for council tax relief during the next financial year. More than 11,000 council taxpayers in Herefordshire currently receive a reduction and more than 6,000 of these claims come from working age householders. Councillors expect this to increase due to the economic impact the coronavirus pandemic is having on people’s livelihoods. Finance and corporate services cabinet member Liz Harvey said it was an extremely difficult and stressful time for local families.

Supporting local businesses through economic uncertainty

Tim Kidd John Sellgren Duncan Sharkey Managing director, Windsor & Maidenhead RBC Economic times do not come much more uncertain than those now prevailing, with both the Covid-19 pandemic and Brexit cutting swathes though previous assumptions about both how to run a business and how to shape a place. An LGC roundtable on “the role of councils in supporting businesses in economic uncertainty”, held in association with Hitachi Solutions, revealed not just mayhem and misery but signs that some positives could come from recent events, ranging from better relations with local businesses to the unsuspected extent of community capacity. The pandemic has devastated many businesses and local economies, and restrictions are likely to persist at least until mass vaccinations kick in. The economic impact could be felt for years.

Maylord Shopping Centre s £100,000 upgrade starts

Herefordshire Council said work is underway for new and improved toilets at Maylord Orchards shopping centre. The toilets closed in July 2019 as the company managing the centre at the time was under financial pressure , but the local authority has recently taken the site back over for around £4.5million. The decision left the city centre with limited public toilets, with the closest in Old Market Shopping Centre. It secured control of the centre in June 2020 with a view to redeveloping the site to support the regeneration of the city centre. The £100,000 investment will also see improvements to enable a number of vacant units to be utilised by pop up retailers, bringing benefits for existing and potential businesses as well as the public.
