The ECOWAS Court of Justice has ordered the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) to amend Section 24 of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Act
According to SERAP, the section violates the rights to freedom of expression, information and other rights of activists, bloggers, journalists, broadcasters and social media users.
ECOWAS Court rules that the section of Nigeria’s cybercrime law is not in conformity with Articles 9 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).
This is despite the lifting of the ban on Twitter in January, seven months after the indefinite suspension of the platform was announced by the Nigerian government in June 2021.
