foiled by information that came directly from the community, in some cases even the immediate family members of those who were alleged to be organizing a terrorist attack or traveling to places like pakistan and others. we re talking about two americans, how we can protect our country. we are both faced with an enemy wishing both our destruction. when those people attack the world trade center they wanted to kill americans, muslims, christians, everybody. when gaz zi or sha zad wanted to blow up times square or the new york subway system, they were planning on killing americans, teenagers, people taking the subway back home. they wanted to kill all of us. when you re talking about plots of mass scale, somebody parking a car about to explode in times square or want to blow up the suck way system in new york or want to blow up the sears tower in chicago, we re talking about the mass killings of thousands of americans if not millions. that s what we need to be
and the minds from my colleagues from cnn international who were there when it happened right from the start. january 2011, the first rumblings of an up rising in cairo. crowds begin to gather in the city s central tahrir square. a revolution has begun. what is your message to president mubarak? reporter: whose hosni mubarak has been egypt s dictate for for 30 years. a growing number of protesters want him out. mubarak digs in and the once peaceful protests turn violent. reporter: this is an unmistakable show of military force. this has been a symbol of de defian defiance. reporter: they re speaking in arabic, go, go. reporter: firefighting in the air. the demonstrators say that s the army firing to warn them to stay away. reporter: promubarak forces targeted the unarmed protesters. journalists come under attack. i was shoved out of the way. this is just a completely surreal experience. i m being told, walk, walk. don t stay. okay. been hit now like ten times.
well, i think it s extremely important that the president speak to the country because right now without any preparation, they ve authorized military action. the french and british have told hair people they re going to participate in in action. up until today, there s been almost no indication from the obama administration that this they support and would want to participate. so having been doubtful, i think the president has to make a persuasive case that we looked through all the difficult questions and we ve answered them and this no fly zone, these air attacks to stop gath from taking over ben gaz zi are a limited military operation,
what does that mean? hours. but the diplomacy is the key factor here. gadhafi will use this time gadhafi has no intention of leaving. he wants to stay. so he ll consolidate his gains in the areas that he s retained or captured. he ll send his intelligence agents through, his police. he ll demand to put his police back into again gaz zi and misrata. he ll infiltrate intelligence agents in there, threatening the opposition and their families. so this is a strug nl a new phase. we have to be very tough and artful in using diplomacy and the leverage we have against gadhafi. so at the same time, the military and the united nations will be acting, what specifically will the united states be doing in this no-fly zone effort? well, that s not clear. the president hasn t made that decision public. i m sure that we re involved deeply in the planning of it. it s not clear whether it s going to come through nato. it doesn t sound like it.
eventually moammar gadhafi will as he has threatened counter attack and send his forces into here. and i can tell you, ben gaz zi is not very well protected. you see young boys are shotguns, machetes, which aren t going on do much ger in gadhafi comes in here with his tanks. so you have part celebration, part apprehension. what do they want from 2345ir neighbors including the united states or have they not had time in the revolution to think about that? they re very disappointed
