Island Briefs Maine lifts outdoor mask requirement   A UGUSTA This week, Governor Janet Mills announced that Maine is updating its public health guidance to remove the requirement that people wear face coverings in outdoor settings.  The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that people wear face coverings in outdoor settings where it is difficult to maintain physical distancing. Face coverings are still required for indoor public settings, and there are no changes to Maine’s physical distancing requirements at this time.   The change is effective immediately and relevant guidance documents will be updated in the coming days.     Town fiber network

Review: First guest artists of season perform with Sarasota Orchestra

The Violin Concerto No. 3 in G Major, K. 216, was composed by Mozart when he was only 19 for orchestra including pairs of flutes, oboes, and horns. The arrangement performed here folded the wind lines into the parts for string orchestra alone. On the surface, this seems like it should work well enough, and it does for much of the accompaniment. However, the lovely legato slow movement felt a bit colorless without the solo flute shining through with the urging counter line of the horn.   This concerto is ebullient and bounces with lively energy. Coucheron’s spirited performance, as well as Mulligan’s over-sized movements, played up these qualities. Mozart’s good humor was fully evident in the final movement of contrasting segments.

Review: Sarasota Opera stages Henry Purcell s Dido and Aeneas

The core of the story is that of the widowed Dido feeling a revival of desire upon meeting the visiting warrior Aeneas. She loves, only to lose again when Aeneas is persuaded to sail away by a deceitful sorceress and her followers. The women are the focal point and have numerous opportunities to shine. As Dido’s maiden Belinda, soprano Lindsay Ohse is a steady thread from beginning to end. She confidently leads the chorus urging Dido to open up to Aeneas and is there at Dido’s death. Yes, spoiler alert, she dies in the end, but that shouldn’t be a big surprise. The lament of Dido’s final aria, “When I am laid in earth,” has enjoyed popular fame for more than 300 years as a peaceful resignation.

Review: Sarasota Opera presents rarely seen Il signor Bruschino

It would be the greatest compliment to DeRenzi to note that the performance continued without a hitch. Under the direction of assistant conductor Geoffrey Loff, making his Sarasota debut this season, the orchestra sounded as polished as usual with notable solos from both English and French horns.  The singers, most of whom are veterans of Sarasota Opera seasons past, carry out their roles with consummate skill pointing to the fact that the largest share of work for both conductor and stage director is done prior to the first performance. Stephanie Sundine has always shown great skill directing large farces and plenty of action on stage. The small cast of “Bruschino” has its own challenges twisting and turning around the deception plotted by lovers Florville (Christopher Bozeka) and Sofia (Hanna Brammer).
