June 16, 2021 •  (TNS) Mobile, Ala., Mayor Sandy Stimpson on Tuesday urged the city to copy Birmingham and give a $5,000 bonus to every full-time city employee, and $2,500 to part-time workers. Stimpson says the money would come from federal relief for COVID-19. The Mobile city council could vote on the plan sometime after June 29. Birmingham city leaders have already endorsed their plan, and the bonus checks are expected to go out to 3,500 full-time employees this month.

Property owner and local businessman Stan Pate streamed a drone video on Facebook Monday to announce the demolition will take place, inviting the community to watch “phase one” of the 2.5-acre plot’s flattening. “We’re gonna take care of business here and put this mall first phase on the ground,” Pate said in the video. “We’re gonna try to do it in less than two hours. Been a long time coming.”
