Missing autistic boy found dead in Florida pond A 4-year-old autistic boy who went missing Monday was found dead in a Florida retention pond. Gavin Douyon wandered away from his Jacksonville home barefoot around 5:30 p.m., according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. Almost 100 officials from the sheriff’s office and Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department searched for several hours for Gavin before he was found dead in the pond. © Handout Gavin Douyon No foul play is suspected, officials said. In late April, 5-year-old Mohamad Nour, who was also autistic, was found dead in another Jacksonville retention pond. According to the National Autism Association, drowning is a leading cause of death among people with autism, and a 2017 study by the Center for Injury Epidemiology and Prevention at Columbia University showed that children with autism have 160 times the chance of dying from drowning compared to other children.

Complaints show concerns over safety of Jacksonville retention ponds

Police pulled the body of 4-year-old Gavin Douyon out of a neighborhood retention pond on the Northside of Jacksonville on Monday night. Municipal records, Department of Children and Families reports and previous news reports show a pattern of children drowning in the wastewater structures across Florida.
