PASSER Marine's LNG Tank Insulation System Gets DNV

Maritime Activity Reports, Inc. 3D model of the tank system. Image care of PASSER Marine DNV has granted an Approval In Principle (AIP) to PASSER Marine for the development of a new LNG fuel tank insulation system. The new concept is designed for prismatic ‘type B’ LNG tanks - which according to IMO rules require a partial secondary barrier - and includes a leakage detection system capable of safely managing and containing fuel leaks. The system we have developed is cost-effective and production-friendly,” said Svein Konradsen, COO of PASSER Marine AS. “The pandemic has been challenging for many companies and for the development of this particular design. The required testing has been difficult to finalize due to testing interruptions and limited possibilities to travel, but finally we have been able to submit the necessary documentation which I am very pleased to say was accepted by DNV.”

Wärtsilä LCO2 carrier awarded AiP

Unveiling the concept on Monday (26 th April), Wärtsilä said the total cargo capacity of the vessels is 7500 cubic meters (cbm), divided into two containment tanks, each of 3750 cbm. Intensive engineering analysis was carried out to formulate an optimum design for the vessels’ containment system and cargo handling systems. “LCO2 is increasingly relevant in global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote a greener future. It represents an important link in the value chain for the entire carbon capture infrastructure,” said Pål Steinnes GM Sales, Wärtsilä Gas Solutions. “In developing a robust and proven concept, both in the cargo containment and cargo handling requirements for LCO2 Carriers, we have drawn on our unparalleled experience in gas carrier segments. The AiP from DNV is a valuable endorsement of this work.”
