(Photo by Eric Nie Photography) DUBUQUE, Iowa — The University of Dubuque announced late last year it has purchased 121 acres of unglaciated land in northeast Iowa to be used as an education and research center that will enhance the experiences of generations of students. The university is also home to the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary, an ecumenical seminary of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). The institution currently known as the University of Dubuque was founded by the Rev. Adrian Van Vliet, who was pastor of the German Presbyterian Church, now known as the First Presbyterian Church of Dubuque, in 1852 to train ministers to serve the influx of immigrants to the upper Midwest.

University of Dubuque buys 121 acres along Mississippi River

University of Dubuque buys 121 acres along Mississippi River December 15, 2020 GMT DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) The University of Dubuque has bought 121 acres in northern Dubuque County that it plans to keep in its native state and use for education and research, officials said. School leaders on Tuesday announced the purchase of Wolter Woods and Prairies, a plot of unglaciated land located north of Balltown along the Mississippi River, the Dubuque Telegraph Herald reported. The acquisition is the culmination of a 10-year relationship between the university and former landowners Mari and Gary Wolter, who sought an owner to continue their efforts to preserve the native landscape. University officials declined to say how much the school paid for the property, but noted an anonymous investor financed the purchase.
