‘Like a treasure trove’: reviving indigenous voices through oral history

More than 40 years ago, Gary Wade, a citizen of South Carolina’s indigenous Catawba Nation, sat down for an interview as part of a project to gather oral histories for UF.
The 15-minute interview touched on Wade’s religious life, his service in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War and his childhood, which was marked by racism as early as elementary school. Despite this, he said he maintained pride in his Native American identity.
SEVIERVILLE â Acknowledging âa measure of sentimentality and sadness,â Sevier County Bank President and CEO Bobby Stoffle spoke Wednesday of the announcement of a planned merger with SmartBank.
Pending regulatory reviews, the merger should be completed by the early third quarter of this year. If approved, customers will likely begin seeing changes in the fall such as the SmartBank name on buildings.
âThereâs a measure of sentimentality and sadness,â Stoffle said of the move.
Sevier County Bank was established in 1909.
Currently, Sevier County Bank operates six local branches and one in Richmond, Virginia. That location operates as Southern Community Bank. When the announcement was made in November 2020 about the new Virginia location, it marked Sevier County Bankâs first expansion outside the area.
