No singular explanation for spike in January deaths

The first month of this year has been the deadliest one Dr. Brent Blue has seen in his time as Teton County coroner. “It’s really pretty bizarre, actually,” Blue said. “These were all unrelated. There weren’t two deaths that were related.” Of the 15 deaths reported in January, 12 were what Blue calls “unattended,” usually meaning it was an unexpected death outside the hospital. The three other deaths were COVID-19 related, according to the Teton County Health Department. But the dozen that were or are being investigated by the Teton County Coroner’s Office were not related to COVID-19, Blue said.

Teton Valley leader dies Joselin Matkins, executive director of Teton Regional Land Trust and a highly involved and beloved Teton Valley community member, died Friday. The Teton County, Idaho, coroner’s office ruled her death a suicide. Matkins, 42, was an East Idaho native who left a lasting impact on conservation in the region, first leading the Sagebrush Steppe Land Trust in Pocatello, then moving to Teton Valley in 2013 to work for and then direct the Teton Regional Land Trust. Matkins departed her Tetonia home for a bike ride Friday morning. Her partner became concerned for her welfare and called the sheriff’s office about an hour and a half later, triggering a search that lasted until evening, when she was found deceased.

Written by Mac Morey on January 7, 2021 On Wednesday, January 6th, park rangers responded to an emergency request that ended up being a cross country skier that was lying on the snow covered forest. It was a group of cross country skiers when suddenly Gary Sternberg, 69, collapsed onto the ground. Two members of the group attempted to initiate CPR to save him while the other got the rangers headed to the scene. Once rangers arrived, almost an hour passed until it was determined that resuscitation was no longer a viable option. It was on the trip back that Sternberg ended up collapsing to what is still an unknown medical cause.
