Nature Nights Will Continue Through the Summer for Youth in the Duluth Area

GARY NEW DULUTH, Minn. – Getting kids off cell phones, and into the forest. It’s a goal of one teacher in the Gary New Duluth neighborhood as the community’s rec center continues to host Nature Nights.
“In spring, kids should smell like dirt,” said Leslie Bucar, youth director at the Gary New Duluth Rec Center.
You can practically smell the excitement at the Gary New Duluth Rec Center.
“I tell parents I will return your children to you tired, happy, and dirty,” said Bucar.

The estimated repairs will take several weeks and the sport court will remain closed until they are completed.

DULUTH, Minn. The Gary New Duluth Rec Center is in its final stages of construction, but on Thursday, organizers noticed several thousand dollars worth of damages to the property.
Vandalism and graffiti can be seen on the skate park, one of the glass basketball hoop backboards was shattered, and one of the excavators from the construction company was also damaged.
As the organization is a non-profit, all funds to build the center come from grants and donations.

A new skate park is coming to the Gary New Duluth Recreation Center.

Earlier today, large concrete blocks were delivered to the site to help build a 95-foot retaining wall.
More than $300,000 have been invested in the skate park, while they need about $350 thousand more to complete the project.
“I think people look at this project and they see how important it is to bring some vitality back to this part of Duluth,” said Fran Morris, a board member of GND Development Alliance. “There’s a lot of nice places to build a home, there’s a lot of young families moving in.”

DULUTH, Minn- On Tuesday, we’ll find out if we get six more weeks of winter or an early spring on Groundhog Day and on Monday some kids in Duluth learned more about the tradition.
As part of the YMCA’s twice-a-week programming at the Gary New Duluth Rec Center, kids got to learn all about Groundhogs, the history of the holiday, and other fun facts and woodchuck-related crafts.
