Of the approximately 40 million used cars sold each year, over 450,000 have odometers that were illegally altered, according to federal estimates.
That’s despite decades of efforts to curtail tampering, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. “Odometer fraud is a serious crime that costs Americans more than $1 billion annually,” an agency spokesman said.

The Berryville City Council held an abbreviated meeting last week, giving approval to a pair of requests to make use of the citys downtown square.
The first, from Gary Gunn, requested permission to perform as a one-man band, using music to talk about Jesus. The time requested for these events was each Saturday through the fall, for two hours after the Farmers Market, with the expectation that they not interfere with any other events or city functions.
The second request came from Starlene Lee and Keith Rivera on behalf of the Carroll County Historical and Genealogical Society, asking permission to make use of several sites in an effort to recreate an old tradition in Berryville, Pioneer and Heritage Days.

(WXYZ) â Anyone in the market looking to buy a used car should be on the lookout for odometer fraud, which is still a major issue in metro Detroit.
Carfax estimates that more than 39,000 cars in Michigan have had their odometers rolled back, with 16,000 of them in metro Detroit.
You may have thought odometer fraud was a thing of the past with digital odometers, but that s not the case as crooks are adapting to the new technology.
