But he ended up at the school’s Golden LEAF Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center (BTEC) instead.King completed BTEC’s one-year certificate program in 2021 and immediately went to work for Abzena, a contract research, development and manufacturing organization in Sandford. He’s now employed by pharmaceutical giant Pfizer in quality control and analytics, supporting the company’s Sanford operations.

This week’s feature highlights the relationship between the NC State Golden LEAF Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center, or BTEC, and Novozymes. BTEC continues to produce hand sanitizer for NC State and also for the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences in downtown Raleigh. Since starting last May, BTEC has produced more than 2,400 gallons of hand sanitizer. It was a new experience for BTEC to obtain the necessary alcohol permits and FDA approval to produce hand sanitizer.
