Garden and refuse workers have been caught in the middle of a tussle over contractual disagreements between Buffalo City Metro Municipality and Gary Rieger owner of East London's only legally compliant garden refuse site.
Donald Card, prolific letter writer, politician, apartheid-era policeman and mayor, husband, father and great-grandfather has died at 93. His son, Robin, of White River, said Card finished his breakfast at the Kennersley Park retirement village on Tuesday, pushed in his chair, turned to friends and said: “Guys, I am not feeling well,” collapsed and died.
East London residents could be looking at the real possibility of losing access to the city’s last remaining garden waste dumpsite, as BCM’s contract with businessman Garry Rieger is set to expire on June 23.With the dump site gone, residents will have no other option but to travel to the municipality’s last two operating dump sites in Qonce or Ntabozuko (formerly Berlin) if they wish to dispose of their garden waste or building rubble.
Anger is building in Gonubie as the licensed private garden refuse and recycling site owned by businessman Garry Rieger threatens to shut on June 30 over nonpayment by Buffalo City Metro (BCM). Rieger said this was the only operating garden refuse site in Buffalo City, apart from Roundhill near Ntabozuko 41km away, and was only meant for use by Gonubie residents.
A road rage case opened by a senior official in the Eastern Cape premier’s office against East London businessman Garry Rieger has been withdrawn. Bhisho government official Sonwabo Mbananga accused Rieger of chasing him down the Gonubie Main Road in February and crashing into his black BMW 330i.
