Weekend Essay: In defence of independence

13 th February 2021 6:00 am The word ‘independent’ conjures up strong emotions. Of the freedom from shackles. Of the strength to live on your own terms. Of the limitless potential to chart your own course in the world. Allegiance to the term is no less powerful in the financial advice market. In the polarised world of IFAs and restricted advisers, that choice of status is more than just a word. It is a mantra by which its staunchest defenders live and die. But cultural shifts in the profession are starting to rise up against independence. Arguments swirl that the days of the IFA are numbered, that they can no longer hold back the restricted tide, that they would be better to accept their fate with grace and humility. It is simply too costly to continue, or even pointless to do so, comes the call from critics.
