EMPIRE, MICH. When it comes to quintessential spots for making Michigan summer memories, it’s tough to beat Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. This 71,000-acre park in Northwest Lower Michigan has all the necessary ingredients for the perfect family vacation: beaches, trails, sweet small towns, and no shortage of activities and interests for every age.

Our search for Michigan’s Best Inland Lake is underway, and we’ve gotten over 60 nominations for fabulous lakes all over the state.
Judging from the many comments that we’ve gotten, it’s clear that Michigander’s love to be out on the water, in every way.
We’ve heard from MLive readers about our lakes with “clear water, beautiful shore lines”, “great fishing”, “sandy bottom”, “easy to get to”, and “great for boating”. It seems like each and every lake offers something unique and special.

It’s been referred to as “the most beautiful place in America” and we are lucky to have it right in our Michigan backyard. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, tucked into the upper corner of the Western Northern Lower Peninsula, isn’t just a Michigan gem, it’s a national treasure. It was also chosen as Michigan’s Best vacation spot for this region by MLive readers.
