Women occupy just 30% of elected positions in New Jersey municipalities and in the state Legislature, lagging two dozen states in the nation, according to new data collected by the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University.
The center says its study of women officeholders punctures a long-held myth that women are better represented in local politics than further up the ladder. This is the first time the Center for American Women and Politics, which has researched the number of women in elective office in New Jersey annually since 2015, has collected the data on a national level.
