STAUNTON The academic calendar for next year has been approved by the Staunton School Board.
“We do intend to be back five days a week,” Superintendent Garett Smith said during Monday night’s School Board meeting.
Staunton City Schools will begin next year on Tuesday, Aug. 10, and end the school year on Wednesday, May 25, 2022, according to the calendar approved at the meeting.
“I’ve had some questions from parents about masks,” Smith said. “I wish I could see into the future and give a definitive answer. It’s my hope that we don’t have to wear masks when we get back. We have not received that guidance yet.”

STAUNTON, Va. (WVIR) - In Staunton Thursday night, the School Board and City Council had a joint meeting to talk money, and theyâre still $444,000 apart on a spending plan.
The School District is asking the city for $13.9 million dollars. Itâs the same amount of money budgeted for 2020, pre-pandemic. That would help address the effects of the pandemic and support strategic initiatives. That includes a 5% employee raise and 19 new demand-driven positions, some of which fill holes left by the 2009 recession.
Staunton schools to keep current hybrid learning plan for rest of school year
STAUNTON The Staunton School Board has decided not to increase in-person instruction days this academic year.
Superintendent Garett Smith and Executive Director of Instruction Stephanie Haskins made a presentation Monday at a called meeting concerning students returning four days a week beginning May 6.
After the presentation, the School Board voted unanimously to keep the current hybrid model two days of in-person instruction and three days of virtual learning in place for the remainder of the academic year.
With the school year ending in Staunton May 20, a four-day-a-week schedule would have only been in place for the final two weeks of the year. It would have also necessitated two teacher workdays to prepare for the change, meaning the overall gain would have been two in-person instruction days.
