There was no basketball court back then, so the soldiers set up two wooden poles on the open ground, nailed an iron ring on them, made a simple basketball hoop, and started to play, said Gao. Qinyuan County, where Gao lives, is located in a mountainous area in north China s Shanxi Province on the site of an old revolutionary base. The Eighth Route Army brought basketball here during China s war against Japanese aggression, and since then, the sport has thrived here for nearly 80 years.
