Dumka/Ranchi: The Mahagatbandhan government of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Congress and RJD scored a hat-trick of bypoll victories in the state on Sunday after JMM candidate Hafizul Hassan won Madhupur bye-election by over 5,000 votes.
Hassan, the elder son of former Madhupur MLA and state minister, late Haji Hussain Ansari, defeated BJP candidate Ganga Narayan Singh by 5,247 votes. While Hassan bagged 1, 10,812 votes, Singh received 1, 05,565 votes. After an initial lead, Hassan trailed as Singh took lead in the 15th round, which he maintained till the 22nd. The counting was completed in 24 rounds.
Soon after his win, chief minister Hemant Soren congratulated Hassan on his victory from Ranchi. “I thank the electorate of Madhupur for reposing faith in our candidate,” Soren told reporters at his residence in the evening.
Ranchi: The high-pitched election campaigns at Madhupur assembly constituency for the April 17 bypoll came to an end on Thursday evening with both JMM and BJP remaining optimistic about their victory.
As many as 3.22 lakh voters will exercise their franchise across 487 polling centres across the constituency on Saturday.
Chief minister Hemant Soren, who was JMM’s star campaigner for party candidate Hafizul Hassan, flew back to Ranchi on Thursday afternoon. Hemant camped in Madhupur since April 9 and held five rallies in various blocks of Madhupur constituency and took part in public contact programmes as well.
Hemant, who had been urging the electorate to vote for Hassan to strengthen his government, wrapped up his canvassing by paying tribute at the grave of late JMM stalwart Haji Hussain Ansari. Besides the chief minister, a battery of his ministers from the Congress party also canvassed for Hassan.

JMM cabinet minister Hafizul Hassan is locked in a direct fight with the BJP’s Ganga Narayan Singh for the bypoll, campaigning for which would end on Thursday.
Dumka/Ranchi: Chief minister Hemant Soren kicked-off his six-day campaign trail in Madhupur on Friday by addressing a public meeting at the Margomunda-based Thana Ground.
In his maiden meeting in Madhupur, Hemant began by attacking BJP and seeking people’s support to strengthen the incumbent Mahagathbandhan government of JMM, Congress and the RJD. “BJP believes in the politics of dividing people on religious lines. You all must step forward to end this kind of politics by supporting our candidate Hafizul Hassan,” Hemant said. He is due to address at least six election meetings across different blocks of Madhupur before returning to Ranchi on April 14.
