Ozone Wipeout In October 2022, humanity narrowly avoided a disaster of epic proportions. A powerful supernova some 1.9 billion light-years away rocked the universe, sending a massive burst of gamma rays toward the Earth. At the time, astronomers dubbed the flareup the BOAT – the brightest of all time. It was an exceedingly rare event, […]

An enormous burst of gamma rays, detected by ESA s Integral space telescope, has struck Earth. The blast caused a significant disturbance in our planet s ionosphere. Such disturbances are usually as
The gamma-ray burst, affectionately dubbed ‘BOAT’ (Brightest of All Time), has been found to emit gamma-rays with energies reaching up to 13 teraelectronvolts, as revealed by a collaboration of scientists who have studied these emissions.
The brightest gamma-ray burst ever seen and detected impacted Earth s atmosphere. It came from a supernova and may reveal why Earth has had mass extinctions in its past.
Last year the brightest flash of light ever seen in the night sky disturbed Earth's upper atmosphere in a way that has never before detected before, researchers said on Tuesday. The BOAT also affected the upper ionosphere the very first time a gamma-ray burst has been observed in this section of the atmosphere, a team of Italian and Chinese researchers said on Tuesday.
