Superintendent: GHS should be ready for students by August
GALESBURG The district s largest building is all but gutted now as District 205 continues to renovate Galesburg High School. The district expects to bring students back into the building this August.
The building will not be finished per se. Work will continue on what is currently the Galesburg Area Vocational Center’s wing of the building, which will play host to a new expansion as the GAVC itself moves into a leased space owned by Northwoods Church.
Very little of the building’s interior will be untouched. Every classroom will be having new paint, new flooring, new walls and new ceilings. The exterior walls and load bearing walls will stay the same, as will some interior windows, but nearly everything else will change.
GALESBURG District 205 School Board members will meet Tuesday to decide how and when they will bring students back into the district.
The meeting will be held at the district’s administrative office at 932 Harrison Street, and begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26.
According to Superintendent John Asplund, the plan the district will bring forward would start bringing students back to school from the late morning to early afternoon on Monday, Feb. 1.
“We’re looking at bringing the students back in the late morning to early afternoon for a few hours to get people acclimated to coming back,” he said Saturday. “The goal is to quickly ramp that up and we’ll be reporting more on that on Tuesday. The goal is to get a lot more kids in school a lot longer in the day.”
PEORIA A suspect was arrested Thursday night in the murder of a Peoria woman whose body was found in East Peoria earlier that day.
Christopher J. Sanders, 42, of Peoria was apprehended in New Baden, according to Peoria Police Department spokeswoman Amy Dotson. The Clinton County community of some 3,200 residents is located east of St. Louis, about 170 miles south of Peoria.
Sanders was arrested on a charge of first-degree murder in the apparent slaying of Mona R. Ellison. The 50-year-old woman s body was discovered Thursday in woods near East Peoria Community High School.
Ellison had been reported missing Wednesday night.
During their investigation, Peoria detectives found information that implicated Sanders, Dotson said. Later Thursday, police had reason to believe Sanders fled to the St. Louis area.
