The crash occurred when the 2016 Toyota Prius driven by Mary Emily Montgomery Smith, 53, of Florence left the roadway in a curve and struck a tree about 10:56 a.m. on Lauderdale County 11 about six miles northwest of Petersville, Alabama State Troopers said. Smith was pronounced dead at North Alabama Medical Center. The front-seat passenger, Gaius Wayne Crakaal, 49, of Florence was flown to Huntsville Hospital and pronounced deceased by hospital staff, troopers said.

Alabama State Troopers identified the fatality victims as Mary Montgomery Smith, 53, and Gaius Wayne Crakaal, 49. Both lived in Florence. The crash happened at 10:56 a.m. Saturday on County Road 11 in the Cloverdale community of Lauderdale County, about eight miles north of Florence. Trooper Cpl. James F. Howard said Smith was driving a 2016 Toyota Prius that left the roadway and struck a tree. Smith was taken to North Alabama Medical Center where she was pronounced dead. Crakaal, the front-seat passenger, was airlifted to Athens Hospital where he, too, was pronounced dead. The 15-year-old boy, Austin Smith, was flown to Nashville for treatment of serious injuries.

Mary Montgomery Smith, 53-year-old female, was driving a 2016 Toyota Prius that left the roadway and struck a tree. Smith was taken to NAMC in Florence and pronounced deceased by hospital staff. The front seat passenger, 49-year-old male, Gaius Wayne Crakaal, of Florence, was flown Athens Hospital and pronounced deceased by hospital staff. The back-seat passenger, 15-year-old male Austin Smith, was flown to Nashville for treatment of serious injuries.
