Black neighborhoods discussed at meeting
By Voleer Thomas
About 50 people gathered for a meeting to keep residents informed about what they demand for their neighborhoods and the changes that have been made where they live.
Hosted by Porters Quarters Community Connection, the meeting on Sunday at Shady Grove Primitive Baptist Church, 804 SW Fifth St., featured residents from historic Black neighborhoods sharing their concerns about the fate of their neighborhoods.
Pastor Ronald Foxx of Shady Grove opened the meeting with a prayer and a brief history of Porters. This has been a community church all of my life, Foxx said.
Foxx has been a member of the church for 65 years and the pastor for 11 years.
Funding Disagreement Leads To Slimmer Aerial Support For Gainesville-Area Law Enforcement

A new Alachua County Sheriff took over this week, and Clovis Watson will need to help decide what to do about the future of the erstwhile Joint Aviation Unit.
The joint helicopter unit disbanded on Sept. 30, following months of fraught negotiations between Gainesville City Manager Lee Feldman and former Sheriff Sadie Darnell about a funding split between the area’s two largest law enforcement entities: the Gainesville Police Department and the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office.
Now, after more than two decades, it is run strictly by the sheriff’s office and is known as the Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit.
