Duncan-Walker ousts Simmons, Johnson cruises to second city commission term

A challenger for the Gainesville City Commission seat that represents east Gainesville is the apparent winner after Tuesday night’s election, edging out the incumbent. It was a close contest for the District 1 seat pitting two candidates who grew up in east Gainesville. With all nine precincts reporting as well as all mail-in ballots and early votes counted, Desmon Duncan-Walker received 1,244 votes, or 52.5%, compared with 1,125 votes for Gigi Simmons, or 47.5%. The results do not become final until Thursday at 5 p.m., when the Canvassing Board will meet at the Supervisor of Elections Office to certify the results. The board will canvass election returns, review bad signatures and provisional ballots issues along with any other evidence that could affect the election results.
