Government, Opposition Claim Each Other’s Reluctance To Have Snap Elections

A senior pro-government lawmaker and an opposition faction leader have blamed each other for reluctance to have snap elections despite their public statements about the need to resolve the political crisis brought on by Armenia’s defeat in last year’s war against Azerbaijan in Nagorno-Karabakh.
Deputy Parliament Speaker Alen Simonian, who represents the majority My Step alliance, told media on Wednesday that he did not consider that Bright Armenia, one of two opposition factions in the Armenian parliament, is genuinely in favor of holding early elections.
During a news briefing at the National Assembly, Simonian said that Bright Armenia would find many reasons to avoid snap elections.
Armenia’s second largest opposition faction in parliament will not field its own candidate if the prime minister resigns, provided snap elections are held by June, its leader said on Monday.

Opposition supporters have rallied in the Armenian capital, Yerevan, to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian.
Demonstrators shouting Nikol, you traitor! and Nikol, go away! surrounded the Foreign Ministry building where Pashinian had a meeting on March 13.
Later in the day, protesters rallied outside the residence of Armenia s largely ceremonial president, Armen Sarkisian, where Pashinian also held talks over ways to defuse the political crisis that has gripped the Caucasus country since a war with neighboring Azerbaijan last year.
Pashinian, whose My Step faction dominates parliament, has refused opposition demands to resign but has hinted at accepting early parliamentary elections under certain conditions.
Armenian President Armen Sarkissian on Saturday met with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian as part of discussions initiated by him to defuse the current political crisis in the country.
