Some members indicated that rule could be up for negotiation as they consider a new speaker, noting it would likely be something candidates would run on as part of their platform.
McCarthy was removed in a 216-210 vote after Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) filed a motion to vacate over allegations the former speaker crafted a “secret deal” with Democrats to advance Ukraine funding in exchange for support on a continuing resolution passed over the weekend to avert a government shutdown.
Gaetz is indicating he would be willing to repeal the rule altogether, but only if Republicans are willing to vote on things such as term limits for lawmakers and a ban on congressional stock trading that was proposed by Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) last month.
The successful ouster was lauded as a win by Gaetz, but the move has angered several of his rank-and-file colleagues with some even going so far as to consider removing him from the House altogether.
