However, when central Government came out with a new National Policy Statement on Urban Development (NPS UD) in August 2020, councils throughout the country were required to come up with a new FDS to get back up to date. While the report to council stated the 2019 FDS could form a starting point for the new document, all the sites currently identified for future growth would need to be reassessed under the new requirements. The new requirements also include broadening the scope of the FDS to promote long-term strategic planning – moving beyond housing and business to take into account things such as infrastructure corridors, hazards and protected environmental/historic areas.
