Resident doctors insist strike will continue, as drug makers lament low patronage

The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), on Friday, insisted that it would continue the ongoing nationwide strike until the Federal Government implements the terms of their agreement, including the payment of salary arrears and the life insurance claims of their colleagues who died from COVID-19. This is even as drug manufacturers also lament that the strike action by the doctors has taken a toll on their business, as sales of drugs in most hospitals has dropped. The Federal Government had claimed it signed a Memorandum of Action (MOA) with the association towards averting the ongoing nationwide strike by resident doctors, which commenced on Thursday, April 1.

Resident doctors suspend two-month strike in Taraba Justin Tyopuusu, Jalingo The Taraba State Chapter of the Association of Resident Doctors on Monday suspended its two-month-old strike. Resident doctors in the state had on December 24, 2020, embarked on an indefinite strike action over what they termed the government’s inability to honour and implement the Memorandum of Understanding signed in September 2020. Announcing the suspension of the strike at a press conference in Jalingo, President of the Association in the State, Dr Gabriel Ahmed, said the decision was reached after several meetings, dialogue and discussions with relevant stakeholders in the State. According to him, the congress of the association agreed to suspend the ongoing strike and support efforts at curtailing the increasing cases of COVID-19 and Lassa fever within the state and its environs.

Announcing the suspension at a news conference in Jalingo, the President of ARD, Dr Gabriel Ahmed, said the decision followed several meetings, dialogue, and discussions with relevant stakeholders in the state. Ahmed said the congress of the association agreed to suspend the strike and support efforts at curtailing the increasing cases of COVID-19 disease and Lassa fever within the state. “Also, due to public outcry and appeal from well-meaning stakeholders and traditional rulers to consider the citizens and people of Taraba, the association deemed it fit to suspend the strike.
