homes exploded because the floodwaters triggered gas leaks inside these homes, and the buildings exploded. thankfully no one was inside. for example, a woman in this building 11 hours because the neighborhood was cut off with all of this floodwater, she was rescued, as i said, by her neighbor across the street. came here, got her and her children out by boat. and they managed to survive and are back here now cleaning up. i mean, just one harrowing story after another. okay. thank you so much for that, gabe. let s go from there to vaughn hillyard in jefferson parish just south of new orleans. vonn, that area saw devastating floods, of course. we re learning the power may not be restored until the end of september? reporter: alex, we re talking weeks here. this is debilitating heat, no power, and you re talking about

new york and new jersey after the region witnessed historic flooding. the governors of new york and new jersey set to speak any moment. we will bring that to you live. let s bring in gabe gutierrez in manville, new jersey. gabe. reporter: stephanie, we are here in manville. a short time ago, authorities moved us back because of electrical crews are working on the power lines here. if we can zoom in to what is going on behind me, this is a home that is still on fire. if you look closely, there are still hot spots after the home next to it apparently exploded. we also have some aerial images as well. stephanie, this is something we have been seeing really throughout the morning. several homes across the region actually exploded or the homes next to them caught fire. firefighters had a very difficult time getting to areas like this because up until late last night, this neighborhood
joining me now is nbc s gabe gutierrez in manville, new jersey. gabe, these are scenes we usually see in the south. this northeast hit was extraordinary and the death toll just out of sight. that s right, andrea. many residents here were just shocked of the intensity of this storm. take a look behind me. this is some of the devastation, and i ll step out of the way while photojournalist steps out of the way. this is a house in manville during an apparent gas leak, and just a few minutes ago firefighters finished dousing hot spots here and now authorities are going through some of the damage and luckily the folks who lived inside this home were not home at the time, but some of the neighbors did stay behind and they say they had to be rescued when the water kept rising. i am joined here actually by megan, we just were speaking a few minutes ago. you are the person who actually lived inside this home. you were renting here
