In the bottom of the seventh inning, Syracuse was down 6-0 with only one out left in the game. Head coach Shannon Doepking made a lineup change, bringing senior Alex Acevedo in to pinch hit for freshman Angel Jasso. Acevedo hadn’t recorded a hit since she recorded three hits against Georgia Tech on April 27, 2019.
In just her tenth at-bat of the season, Acevedo did not swing at the first four pitches, resulting in a 2-2 count. With Yellow Jacket pitcher Blake Neleman one strike away from no-hitting SU, Acevedo called time, stepping out of the batter’s box before resetting her stance to face her fifth pitch. Neleman’s offspeed pitch caught the outside corner of the strike zone and the Orange’s season came to an end.

Syracuse’s leadoff hitters, Calista Almer and Angel Jasso, both struck out in the first inning against Clemson pitcher Valerie Cagle’s opening eight pitches.
Neli Casares-Maher came up to bat, taking a ball on the first pitch. She sized up the second pitch and leveled her sixth home run of the season into the right-center field netting, giving Syracuse a 1-0 lead just 10 pitches into the game.
Then in the third inning, Paris Woods led off and crushed a first-pitch home run 215 feet into the center field netting, tying the game at 2-2.

Down 3-0, with two outs and two runners on base for Syracuse, Gabby Teran faced an 0-2 count against Virginia Tech’s ace Keely Rochard. On the seventh pitch of the at-bat, Teran rolled over on a changeup, softly grounding out to Hokies’ third baseman Cameron Fagan to end the inning. After failing to beat out the throw, Teran pointed her head toward the Syracuse sky in despair and ripped off her arm guard, knowing that she had just missed the Orange’s best opportunity all game to score off Rochards.
