president speech in the g20 i am eric shawn. allow everyone the g20 negotiators reaching a deal on the landmark agreement for a global corporate tax rate. but climate change dominated the agenda during the two-day meeting ahead of the united nations climate conference in glasgow scotland. that would be the president next thought. right now will go to rome amy kellogg is standing by to what to expect from president biden s remarks as we await those remarks. hi, so much of this g20 is about setting the stage for the climate change conference that is starting today. they really want to prove that it is more than what the famous climate the italian prime minister mario putting a positive spin on progress that
interests in the g20 countries, and therefore they really are not able to implement what they are promising. i really did sense, certainly among the young protesters yesterday, that there s a feeling that these leaders really just cannot deliver on their promises. and there s a lot of hot air coming out of this summit. but in terms of practical, palpable actions that will reduce pollution, that will combat climate change, are probably not going to come as quickly as they would like to see them. kim? all right, ben wedeman in rome, thanks so much. i want to bring in cnn s kevin liptack who s covering this and joins us as well from rome. kevin, one of president biden s priorities, that global minimum tax that ben was talking about. got leaders to agree to that
between global leaders at the g20 summit in rome. he said tangible progress has been made on climate change, the pandemic and the global economy, in part due to america s role in the negotiations. i m proud that g20 endorsed the global minimum tax. this is something the united states has been driving for for over a year, building momentum up to this achievement. this is an incredible win for all of our countries. instead of nations competing each other to attract investments by bottoming out corporate tax rates, this sets a minimum floor of 15% to ensure that giant corporations begin to pay their fair share, no matter where they re headquartered, instead of hiding profits overseas. we ve also agreed to establish a fund in the future for countries to draw on to help prevent, if necessary, and responded to the next pandemic, to prepare for the next time around. yesterday, together
the g20 summit in rome and has this assessment of the draft final communique that the leaders of the world s biggest economy are set to approve later this afternoon. we are getting a draught final communique that is making the rounds here. it could still be tweaked, of course, in the couple of hours to come, but it s pretty long, i have to say. so the fruit of several months work. on the climate issue, let me just give you headlines. the g20 leaders are saying that they have agreed to pursue efforts to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees above preindustrial level. that is going further than the paris climate accord of 2015 when the idea at that stage was to cap it at well below two degrees, and ideally closer to 1.5 degrees. so it appears they have come down to target 1.5 degrees. you have to remember, these communiques are all about the nuance and the language and the choice of words. but then, on the issue. and on the 1.5 degrees,
corporations. we ve seen reaction from leading corporations- corporations. yes, on these communiques corporations. yes, on these communiques it corporations. yes, on these communiques it is - corporations. yes, on these communiques it is really - corporations. yes, on these i communiques it is really about looking at the nuance of the language, and this communique, we think this is probably the fifth draught of the communique and hasn t yet been actually finalised. it could even be tweaked in the next hour or two. what we think it is saying is that the g20 leaders will undertake meaningful and effective actions to pursue efforts to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees. remember, at 1.5 degrees target above preindustrial levels is the kind of key figure here, because the scientific consensus is that if we go beyond global warming 1.5 degrees, and at the moment the world is not on track at all to meet 1.5 degrees, then we could be seeing much, much more of that extreme weather, the
