The staff of Lochel s Bakery in Hatboro worked around the clock over Valentine s Day weekend, but they weren t making chocolate treats.
Instead, they were preparing at least 15,000 fastnachts, or Fast Night doughnuts for customers to mark Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday, the day that precedes the start of Lent.
For Christians, Lent is a time of reflection, fast and penitence before rejoicing in Christ s Resurrection at Easter. But before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, Mardi Gras celebrations and the German tradition of eating fastnachts, takes place.
