The Neo Geo Pocket might not be spoken of with the same kind of revered tones as the Game Boy or even the Game Gear, but it should be. Small, stylish and with a dizzying array of fighting games to play, the Neo Geo hit streets before the turn of the millennium, but failed to capture consumer interest due to its high price. Thanks to the wonders of modern technology, we can now play the best the Neo Geo Pocket had to offer on the Nintendo Switch.
Fatal Fury First Contact is one of many entries in the Fatal Fury series, although it changes things up with a chibi art style, making many of the classic characters like Terry Bogard, Mai Shiranui and Jo Higashi look quite cute while they all violently beat each other up.

While there’s no official Virtual Console on the Nintendo Switch, there are a few places to get your retro gaming fix. There are, of course, the two obvious destinations, NES and SNES Nintendo Switch online. But what if you’re into deep cuts and forgotten consoles? Fatal Fury First Contact is a smack of the Neo Geo past.
Even if you were alive and gaming in the late ‘90s, there’s a good chance the Neo Geo Pocket Color wasn’t even a blip on your radar. It was a powerful little system but didn’t leave the impression the Gameboy Color left. Still, if you wanted a solid arcade-style fighting game that was also portable in 1999, you could do worse than Fatal Fury First Contact.

SNK would commit to, as the console would only last about a year and the corporation itself would be sold while in financial trouble only months after release. The new owners of the IP just didn t commit to gaming the way SNK had, even though the New Geo systems always were on the cutting edge of the tech at the time. Perhaps a little too cutting edge forcing introductory price points that prohibited many North American consumers from taking the plunge into the ecosystems. I ll always remember Neo Geo consoles as the ones that played those awesome looking games I could never afford.
