Emergency inspection closes southbound Buckman Bridge in Jacksonville

Buckman Bridge travelers can get back to their daily commutes following Thursday s traffic ordeal that saw all of the southbound lanes closed for eight hours to repair a damaged expansion joint, according to the Florida Department of Transportation. But the metal plates covering what is called an exposed finger joint are only a temporary fix to allow vehicles to safely travel over Interstate 295 span, officials said. A permanent repair will be done over the next several weeks, expected for overnight work but requiring some lane closures, the Transportation Department said. The reopening puts an end to detours that saw traffic on the Westside Jacksonville and Clay County side of the bridge rerouted onto Blanding Boulevard. It then detoured miles south to Florida 16 and the Shands Bridge, or north to Interstate 95 and the Fuller Warren Bridge to cross the St. Johns River.
