Herman “Makaio” Kuailani of Haiku, Maui, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on February 12, 2021, in Wailuku, Maui.
He is predeceased by his lifetime sweetheart, Mary “Aunty Lei” Ishiki; parents, Simeon Paul Kuailani and Imi Honokaupu; sister, Violet (Joseph) Poowahi.
Herman is survived by his brothers, Sam (Bella,deceased), and George; sisters, Frances (Joseph,deceased) Kahalehoe, Laura Afoka, Kehau Kuailani, Linda (Jim) Kaneopua; caregivers, Tony and Annette Golis; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Uncle Kaio worked in the construction industry as a mason for many years. He also worked alongside Ken Romkee building waterfalls throughout Maui.
In his spare time, Uncle Kaio enjoyed doing arts and crafts with his primary focus on making lauhala hats and feather leis. He loved taking daily walks in Haiku and frequented Fukushima Store for their famous hot dogs. Uncle Kaio was known to have strong hands and often gave family and friends massages to h
