reporting and context there. thank you. cnn s ed lavendera is in odesa. there have been some air strikes where you are and in mykolaiv. what have you learned about those attacks? reporter: well we went through two rounds of air strikes here in city of odesa, which is the key port city in the south. one early morning on sunday, one late at night on sunday. hitting a oil refinery and fuel storage facilities. officials here in the region say that one person was injured in those attacks. and then earlier today, we learned that there was strikes just up the road, about a two hour drive northeast of here in mykolaiv, where one person was killed and five people were injured. but what is separating these two attacks is that here in odesa, it appears it was specifically targeted. that it was a pinpointed toward
night. these were strategic kind of targets by all accounts here in the odesa area, targeting an oil refinery facility as well as fuel storage facilities. we have been told today that in those two rounds of strikes, one person was injured. there was an apartment building and some homes near some of those sites that suffered some damage as well. but it does raise the concern here in odesa. this is a city that has enjoyed a relative amount of quiet for the last week or so. that drastically changed yesterday with those two rounds of air strikes here in the city. sometimes it s really just the unpredictable nature of all of this. if you go two hours up the road in mykolaiv, there was air strikes there earlier today that killed one person and injured five other people. and in that situation, local officials are saying that the purpose of that striking was to create harassment and panic among the population. so it s the unpredictable nature
odessa, destroying an oil refinery and three fuel storage facilities. joining me now live from lviv, nbc news correspondent gabe gutierrez. gabe, what can you tell us about this latest attack from the russians, and the new pictures out of bucha? reporter: hi there, jonathan. good morning. well, yes, this morning in odessa, that southern port city, an historic city, saw a series of airstrikes. the russian ministry of defense says an oil refinery was destroyed as well as several fuel storage facilities. no word yet on any injuries, but that was an attack on the southern part of the country. we are also hearing of fighting intensifying in the east. jonathan, the pictures are just devastating. as you said, the pictures are extremely disturbing to watch. there are civilians strewn
ukraine, targeting these fuel storage facilities in various cities. but here in odesa, you know, early on, this is the most significant strike this city has seen since the early days of the invasion. and for the most part, for the last week, it had been relatively quiet. and many residents here in the city have been closely watching what is happening with russian forces in the north as they retreat and regroup. and there s still a concern here that as russian forces regroup and refocus on the eastern part of this country, they wonder if russia s plans still continue to have a city like odesa in its sights. this is a key port city, a significant city for ukraine. if they were to lose it in any way, it would essentially mean the country becomes a landlocked country. the strike here this morning, sending a jolting shiver through people here in this city. it was certainly a focus for the russians, just as of a few weeks ago. we ll see if now, with this reassessment of their strategy, it
to come up with terms for any sort of peace agreement. meanwhile, new video from the kyiv suburbs as russian forces pull out. we should warn you, some of these images are disturbing. new explosions in southern ukraine. air strikes near the historic port city of odesa. russia says it destroyed an oil refinery and fuel storage facilities, as russian troops fall back in the northern part of the country. the carnage is grim in the suburb of kyiv. bodies lying on the streets of bucha. those people were just walking and russian troops shot them without any reason, according to this man. president zelenskyy says russian forces are leaving behind a total catastrophe as they fall back. they re mining the whole territory, he says. yet there s a potential breakthrough in the war. the stage may be set for a face-to-face meeting between president zelenskyy and president putin. the lead ukrainian negotiator says russia has verbally
