of gasz. well, that s fairly constant. but with a plane like this, all those other factors, how much it had to turn and maneuver and how low it was determines how quickly it burns out its fuel load, on top of which, brooke i know that you would think of this, maybe a lot of people wouldn t, but as you burn all that fuel, all of that weight, the physics of the plane are changing. because it s getting lighter. and that also comes into play. so knowing when the fuel ran out, that s still a guess. and again, if you re off by five minutes, ten minutes, 20 minutes in terms of when the fuel ran out, makes a huge difference as to where the plane goes. brooke? still sounds like a lot of guesses listening to you here. tom foreman, thank you. and even though there are more than 200 lives lost, presumed lost here, one of the world s most sophisticated jets is capable of disappearing, media critics taking on cnn for its coverage. there s a new poll suggesting those critics are wrong.
find this debris area of something, using satellites. now, david, i keep talking about this being the extremes of the range of this jet because one of the working theories is that the jet was flying basically a ghost ship, that those on board, potentially no longer had the ability to fly this jet, that it was flying on auto pilot and it would do so until it ran out of fuel. so it makes sense, that if that was the case, it makes sense it would have also the satellite data coming out, the plane may have gone along the southern or northern arc. it also suggested it flew for several hours, right at the extremity perhaps when the fuel ran out. so it does add up at this moment, but you have to be extremely cautious at this time because it s only a few indistinct pictures from a commercial satellite.
in satellite photos and actually identify it as aircraft parts. once they do that, and if we assume that it is aircraft parts, then they re going to have to start the search all over again, because those aircraft parts that they find may not be anywhere close to the main debris field we re looking for. that s the main debris field will be where the cockpit data recorder is. this could, again, be a time-consuming length lengthy process right now. let me ask you, as a follow up, again from the new york times, from an expert, tim farr rar from the satellite and tell come systems. he said if the debrie is in the predicted area, it was not under active pilot control in the last few hours of flight. the assumption is in the southern ocean, the pilots were incapacitated and it was flying on auto pilot until the fuel ran
