Ambulance director says flu calls have increased

FRUITLAND — Payette County Ambulance Director Rick Funk presented the Ambulance Department report for April to the Fruitland City Council at its regularly scheduled meeting on Monday. Funk said the month was a “super busy” one and crews were “run ragged out there” and “did a really good job.” In terms of emergency calls related to the COVID-19 pandemic, he said that he noticed a shift. “It’s funny, they’ve all changed. They’re not so much COVID anymore and we’re starting to see flu again and that kind of stuff, so yeah,” Funk said. He went on to explain how he expected to see “these things go up and down” as businesses start to open back up again.

Fruitland police chief gives update

FRUITLAND — Fruitland Chief of Police J.D. Huff presented his report to the Fruitland City Council and noted to them that he made “some marks on his initial police report.” Of the marks he made, Huff said one of those is 59 controlled substance citings, but not of these are necessarily arrests. He said that another thing he “should have  Huff stated that he had 9 DUI blood draws and all of those blood kits had to be sent to the state police. “A lot of people driving under the influence of drugs, not so much alcohol,” said Huff. He said that “more and more” people are using “prescription drugs” and “controlled substances” in Fruitland and “our dogs are sniffing ‘em out left and right.”

Cities on board for second bridge but will look for federal funding; Ontario sends letter to lawmakers

ONTARIO An infrastructure idea that was floated at a work session of the Ontario City Council on April 8 is now being backed by a plea from the council to lawmakers for help in funding the project. That plea is in the form of a letter to Gov. Kate Brown, and several Oregon, Idaho and U.S. representatives and senators. That letter was brought up during the second regular meeting of the City Council on April 27, continuing the idea of a second bridge connecting Ontario and Fruitland, by means of extending Ontario’s Southeast 18th Avenue to an Interstate 84 overpass into Fruitland.

Infrastructure a hot topic at recent work session

ONTARIO We may not have to worry about a stuck cargo ship on the Snake River blocking trade traffic locally and to our region, but it was that recent situation in the Suez Canal that got Mayor Riley Hill thinking outside the box about access into Ontario. And after mulling it over as a group, the council decided to have Ontario Community Development Director Dan Cummings look into the transportation master plan to see what it would take to get another route into Ontario. This and other infrastructure projects topped a long list of discussion and action items at the Ontario City Council’s work session on April 8.
