End education crisis in Northern Kenya

THE STANDARD By Mohamed Guleid | February 4th 2021 at 00:00:00 GMT +0300 According to the Kenyan law, education for children is a right. The Basic Education Act of 2013 states that every child has a right to free and compulsory education. Going to school, therefore, is not a matter of choice, but an obligation. Every parent must ensure his or her child goes to school, failure of which might lead to prosecution. Unfortunately, most children from the pastoralist communities lack this opportunity. Insufficient infrastructure for education has been a challenge to easy access to education for children in the marginalised areas. It is not unusual to see more than 100 children sitting on the floor while attending class.

1 2 m children dropped out of schools in 10 Northeastern counties

THE STANDARD By Antony Gitonga | February 1st 2021 at 00:00:00 GMT +0300 Mandera Governor Ali Roba (L) who is also the chair Frontier Counties Development Council with his counterparts Dhadho Godhana (Tana River) and Josephat Nanok (Turkana) in Naivasha on 31/1/21. [Anthony Gitonga, Standard] At least 1.2 million children have dropped out of school in 10 North Eastern counties. Governors from the region attributed the high number of dropouts to insecurity, lack of teachers, drought and recently the Covid-19 pandemic. They said when the schools reopened early this year after the Covid-19 pandemic, a total of 107,000 learners did not report back to their schools. The county chiefs who met under the Frontier Counties Development Council blamed the State, saying the Ministry of Education has not done enough to address the issues around the large number of dropouts.

With a firm belief in a common destiny, I intend to keep telling the story of the emerging powerhouse that is Kenya.

Ensure energy access for those left behind

THE STANDARD By Mohamed Guleid | December 23rd 2020 at 19:19:59 GMT +0300 The Frontier Counties Development Council (FCDC) is a regional economic bloc composed of the County Governments of Lamu, Tana River, Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Marsabit, Isiolo, Turkana, Samburu and West Pokot brought together by need to enhance socio-economic development and peaceful co-existence. Over the past two years, Kenya has been celebrating important progress in efforts to realise Universal Energy Access by the government’s 2022 target, well before the Global 2030 SDG target. However, while the national electrification rate has risen from 23 per cent in 2009, to over 70 per cent, much of this has been along the central corridor –Mombasa – Nairobi- Lake Victoria, leaving out much of the North and North Eastern communities.
