Proof is in the pie: Dough Boys artisanal pizza opens in Waynesville

Located inside Mad Anthony’s Taproom in Waynesville, Dough Boys Pizza & Wings offers an array of specialty and made-to-order artisanal New York style pies. Grabbing a seat inside Mad Anthony’s Taproom in downtown Waynesville one recent evening, Benji Boessel and Alex Tinsley can’t help but gaze around at the other tables.  “When you put yourself out there, you’re putting your reputation on the line every day,” Tinsley said. “We’re having so much fun doing this. To look around and see the people enjoying what we’re doing is such a high for us we’re fueled by that.”

Top controversies of 2020

When we rang in 2020 this time last year, who knew it would go down as a dumpster fire? From murder hornets and street riots to epic natural disasters and working from home in pajamas, 2020 was a year of mishaps and mayhem. Haywood County had an ample helping of drama and spectacle of its own. Here’s a look back at the top controversies of 2020. Homeless showdown The negative spill-over effects of the homeless population in Waynesville was hands-down one of the top controversies of 2020. Critics of the homeless population became a regular fixture at the twice-monthly Waynesville town board meetings for much of the year, donning yellow T-shirts that read “Saving Haywood.”

Homeless task force vacancies to go unfilled

Waynesville leaders have reversed course on filling five vacancies on its controversial homeless task force, dashing hopes of critics that an infusion of additional members would bring more balance. The task force came under fire shortly after its inception for being weighted toward those involved in homeless outreach and support, including social services, nonprofits and faith-based groups. After five people appointed to the task force dropped out without ever attending a single meeting, critics saw it as a chance to level the playing field. “On the five vacant seats, please consider making it residents or business owners, especially people from those areas that have been affected by the homeless — but not more of the nonprofits and charities and churches,” Wanda Brooks urged when addressing the town board during public comment in October.

Greenville City Council to consider annexation requests, historic preservation proposal

Annexation is the topic of several items the Greenville City Council is scheduled tp tackle today during its 6 p.m. virtual meeting. Pitt County government is seeking a waiver that will allow a Stantonsburg Road neighborhood to receive sewer service without the required annexation. Public hearings are also scheduled for the annexation requests of two property owners in southwest Greenville. The council also will hear a report on the results of the financial audit for fiscal year 2019-20. Homes in Candlewick neighborhood, located about four miles west of Greenville, have struggled with failing septic systems for years. Pitt County’s Planning and Development Services office started working with the homeowners to secure grant dollars that install infrastructure and allow the neighborhood to connect with the Greenville Utilities service.
