The Climatic and Humanitarian Impacts of Nuclear War” is the topic of the monthly meeting of Friends of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. A climate science professor at Rutgers University will discuss how nuclear war could affect the climate and humanity during a virtual meeting in Oak Ridge on Tuesday, May 18.
Alan Robock will be the featured speaker at the virtual monthly meeting of Friends of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The meeting will be open to the public, and it is scheduled to begin at noon Tuesday, May 18.
Robock is a distinguished professor of climate science in the Department of Environmental Sciences at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. His FORNL talk is titled “The Climatic and Humanitarian Impacts of Nuclear War.”

“A Tribute to Alvin Weinberg,” including information on the new online database of his scientific publications and other documents, will be presented virtually to the public from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 20 (Weinberg’s birth anniversary).
The presentation, via Zoom, is sponsored by the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge and Friends of Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
“The purpose of this public online event is to honor Alvin Weinberg’s legacy and to celebrate the preservation and digitization of his papers,” said Rhonda Bogard, who led the digitization of the papers, most of which were initially donated to the Children’s Museum in 1986.

‘Exotic Molecules, Ions and Vacuum of Interstellar Space’ to be FORNL topic

Robert N. Compton Sr., Oak Ridge National Laboratory corporate fellow emeritus and University of Tennessee professor emeritus, will speak to Friends of Oak Ridge National Laboratory about “Exotic Molecules, Ions and Vacuum of Interstellar Space” virtually on Zoom at noon Tuesday, Feb. 9.
The interstellar medium (ISM) is the matter and radiation that exists in the vacuum between the stars in our Milky Way galaxy. The ISM consists mainly of hydrogen (90%), helium (9%), and a small component of heavier elements, dust and electrons, stated a news release announcing the meeting.
