FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) Crime scene tape and police cruisers blocked off several streets in southeast Fresno Wednesday morning, putting residents on alert. It don t look good, says Alfred Nunez. If they got it all taped off like that, then it is something major.
It was in this small parking lot near Jackson and Kings Canyon that an officer shot and killed a wanted parolee.
Chief Paco Balderrama says the suspect was a high-risk sex offender and gang member in his 30 s, who charged at another officer with something in his hand. All they knew is that he had some type of an item, which turned out to be a tool in his hand, but he was lunging at one of the officers when he was shot, Balderrama said.

A number of public gatherings took place across Southern California on New Year s Eve, including another maskless event hosted by actor Kirk Cameron and a large outdoor concert in Valencia with hundreds in attendance.
Fresno police say their ShotSpotter technology usually goes off about 15 times on a normal weekend day. Between 6:00 pm on New Year s Eve and 6:00 am on New Year s Day, it went off more than 340 times, with the technology picking up more than 1,700 rounds being fired. Once those guns start going off, the bullets are going to come back down. People need to understand that, said Lt. Stephen Viveros of the Fresno Police Department.
