South by Southwest (SXSW) is a major festival held annually in Austin, Texas, that allows attendees to explore what’s next in the worlds of film, culture, music, and technology.
The event attracts big names and large crowds Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, Lady Gaga and Barack Obama have been speakers and is as well-known these days for its peek into technologies of the future as it is for its musical guests and exploration of cultural trends.
It s the place to be for up-and-coming stars in the media and tech world in particular, and the star-struck attendees often bring the ideas that come out of the event back home to their social and work circles.
Did somebody say trout?
Yes, that time of year is quickly approaching the opening day of trout season statewide is April 17. That’s a few months away, certainly good news for area anglers who are yearning to get outdoors.
It’s clear, after a recent annual watershed summit of Trout Unlimited, that stocking will be important, as has become the norm.
Lycoming College’s Clean Water Institute and Susquehanna University’s Fresh Water Institute have been studying local streams for years. Students have been measuring the fish population and monitoring what’s happening in watersheds that affect aquatic life here, including the Eastern Hellbender, the official state amphibian.
POSITION SUMMARY
Under guidance from the Director of Research, the Precision Aquaculture Scientist leads USDA-ARS research objectives related to precision aquaculture technologies and develops and leads precision aquaculture research projects through industry contracts and/or collaborations with external researchers. The Precision Aquaculture Scientist plays a key role in the Freshwater Institute’s research team and contributes to the team’s success through innovation and technical expertise in this growing field. The Precision Aquaculture Scientist delivers high-quality, leading edge science and peer-reviewed scientific journal articles, and through active engagement with the international research community ensures that The Freshwater Institute is at the forefront of precision aquaculture research.
Looking back on the past 30 years we can see where failed projects went wrong – technology that could not maintain water quality at maximum feed loading required for the bioplan, inconsistent seedstock supply resulting in missed cohorts and/or poor growth, insufficient operating capital before first harvest and cash flow began, unrealistic fish growth assumptions, inadequate water supply, and many more reasons.
Land-based projects may be quicker to fail from the risks that are common with other types of aquaculture, but we have not looked at that yet.
Our goal at The Conservation Fund’s Freshwater Institute is to effectively de-risk land-based fish farming by identifying limitations and issues, developing and testing solutions, and then publishing the results for everyone to learn from. We sincerely believe that we have had a positive impact that is now helping to build success in the sector.

Researchers updated the Lake George Park Commission on their ongoing study of the first harmful algal blooms spotted in the Adirondack lake this fall.
In late October, the Lake George Association identified the first harmful algal bloom in the Queen of American Lakes. In a lake known for its clear waters, the sighting was unusual but also something that officials had been preparing for.
Walt Lender, Executive Director of the LGA, spoke to WAMC in November.
“Lake George has always been and is a low-nutrient lake. So we typically would not expect to see a harmful algal bloom, however, this clearly shows us that we are not immune to harmful algal blooms,” said Lender.
