Police searching for hit-and-run driver after 77-year-old woman found on side of road Updated Mar 10, 2021; A 77-year-old woman was struck Tuesday night by a hit-and-run driver in Matawan, according to a statement from the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office. The Matawan resident remained in critical condition Wednesday night at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune Township, the office said. The Matawan Police Department was called to Freneau Road near the Mediterranean Chateau restaurant in town shortly before 7 p.m. for a report of a body in the road, authorities said. Police found the woman lying in the shoulder of the northbound lane of the road and she was treated at the scene by local paramedics before she was taken to the hospital, police said.
