tornadoes yesterday around the houston-texas area. it s all part of the bigger system that s now as you mention across the upper midwest and great lakes and northeast, mixture of sleet and snow and we have winter storm advisories in effect as well as freezing rain advisories for parts of pennsylvania up towards up state new york. things could be tricky, just be careful on the roadways. our next big system across the west, yes, more rain, more mountain snow from the northwest down towards central california. inches of rain and feet of snow yet again. the past couple of storms have definitely put a dent in the drought but too much of a good thing could cause flash flooding and big-time avalanche concerns. inauguration week, weather looks pretty good. temperatures above average but we could see rain on friday.
let s take a look at it just west of the houston area. that s where we have a tornado warn storm. doppler radar indicating rotation there. we had tornadoes yesterday outside of the dallas area. we had a football game going on and people needed to seek shelter. not only dallas but north of waco. we could see large hail, damaging winds, isolated tornadoes out of this big system that is producing an ice storm. we would have had over an inch of ice on the roads, on the power lines and that caused incredible damage. unfortunately we have had deaths out of this. freezing rain advisories, ice storm warnings in place where you see the purple and the light purple there. and we could see some more accumulation today in parts of nebraska up towards the great lakes. okay, brian, back to you for sports. brian: almost. thanks, janice. at the age of 82. artisan and resident of the u.s. marine corps undertook a final mission. honoring our nation s medal of honor recipients through his paintings.
just as millions are trying to get home for the holidays. joining us now to talk about what s ahead, cnn meteorologist allison chinchar looking in her telescope to tell us what s going on. her snow globe. you were supposed to use snow globe there. it s applicable. snow globe is perfect. yes, some cities are actually excited the system is moving east and that would include seattle and portland and even san francisco because that means most of the system is finally exiting their area, but we also have another system in the eastern half of the country bringing incredibly heavy rain to cities like new york, d.c., philadelphia and stretching down towards nashville and even some snowfall starting to arrive into boston. here we have a winter weather advisory out for portions of northeast and even a freezing rain advisory. that s certainly much more dangerous for driving conditions. and we also have freezing rain advisories out towards the west as well as ice storm warnings and a blizzard
