The Mississippi State Department of Health reported 1,701 new cases of the coronavirus and 28 deaths on Monday.
On Wednesday the state surpassed 200,000 cases of COVID-19 since the virus hit Mississippi in March. On Tuesday, the state reported a record 79 deaths. The state s one-day record of new cases, 2,746, was set on Dec. 9.
On five days last week new COVID-19 infections topped 2,000, a mark that had not been surpassed during the pandemic until earlier this month.
The Mississippi State Department of Health urges Mississippians to avoid social gatherings that include individuals outside the nuclear family or household. That includes weddings, funerals, sporting events and in-person church services.
